Technology Standards Survey

Technology in schools is an important educational tool - more now than ever! In order to support Reynolds staff and students, the RSD Technology Committee is recommending the adoption of the ISTE Standards and the Common Sense Media digital citizenship curriculum.

Learn more about the proposed technology standards and digital citizenship curriculum below and let us know your thoughts!

Technology Standards

Technology skills are essential for success in the 21st century, and the success of students learning technology skills depends on our adopting well-crafted and thorough standards. The Reynolds School District Technology Committee is recommending adoption of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards.

The rationale for adopting this set of resources includes:

With few sets of technology standards out there, the ISTE standards are the most-commonly referenced educational technology standards.  The Department of Education Office of Educational Technology references the ISTE standards in their 2017 National Education Technology Plan.

The ISTE standards:

  • are easy to integrate into the core curriculum,
  • can be adapted and taught at all grade levels,
  • will allow creation of a K-12 scope and sequence, connected to ELA, Math, and ESOL standards for all grade levels,
  • exist for teachers, students and other educators, which ensures that all Reynolds teachers become 21st century educators,
  • provide consistent technology instruction for students,
  • provide a clearly articulated scope and sequence aligned with content area curriculum maps, and
  • provide a common set of standards in which to assess students (elementary students are assigned a specific technology grade).

ISTE Students   •  ISTE Estudiantes  •  ISTE Студент

The RSD Technology Committee researched how other states are addressing technology standards. Since most states already use the ISTE standards, we believe it to be in the interest of our students to align with neighboring states.

Digital Citizenship Curriculum

It is recommended that RSD consider the adoption of Common Sense Media materials to ensure the consistent delivery of standards across all K–12 schools.  It is important to ensure that these critical topics are addressed as we strive to offer 21st century learning environments.

While there are few sets of technology/digital citizenship curriculum available to K–12 schools, the curriculum designed by Common Sense Media has become recognized as the industry standard.

The rationale for adopting this set of resources includes:

  • Lessons are already migrated to our Learning Management System and are easily available to all RSD teachers from K to grade 12.
  • Many of the lessons provide coverage of the Division standards required by the Oregon Department of Education.
  • Many of the lessons address critical areas of social-emotional learning, which is a district priority.
  • The curriculum addresses 6 core topics of digital citizenship:
    • Media Balance & Well Being
    • Privacy & Security
    • Digital Footprint & Identity
    • Relationships & Communication
    • Cyberbullying, Digital Drama & Hate Speech
    • News & Media Literacy
  • Easy to implement with training resources available to teachers through self-paced trainings and webinars.
  • The curriculum offers many interactive student games/activities to enhance lessons and engage students.
  • Aligned with International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards.
  • Lessons are available in Spanish.
  • There are many family engagement lessons and resources ready to share with families.

Common Sense Media has considered the latest research on what kids need to know about digital citizenship, what the best pedagogical approach is, and how to best support teachers.  Their lessons are adjusted to meet these student needs.
