Respiratory Illness Information

Child with Respiratory Illness

Monday, December 5, 2022

Dear Reynolds School District Staff and Families,

There has been a surge in pediatric respiratory illnesses other than COVID-19 such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), rhinovirus/enterovirus, and influenza around the country this fall.

Health departments in other states have seen children presenting with multiple respiratory illnesses. According to the Oregon Health Authorityrates of respiratory disease are currently rising in our state.

Reynolds School District takes a variety of steps to ensure healthy school environments so that in-person learning can continue. In accordance with CDC guidance, we are also urging families to take steps to protect themselves and minimize the spread of communicable diseases in our schools.

There are a variety of things you can do to help us reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses and help keep our students and staff healthy and attending class.

>>> Please consider wearing a mask in schools. Masks are optional. Determining whether to wear a mask is left to the discretion of you and your family. <<<

  • Keep your student home when they are sick
  • Make sure your student gets a flu shot
  • Keep your student up-to-date on the COVID-19 vaccine and boosters
  • Wash your hands and avoid touching your face

Monitoring for symptoms is important.  If you or your student present symptoms of respiratory illness, including coughing, sneezing, runny nose, fever, or shortness of breath, please contact your healthcare provider right away.

The health and well-being of our students are extremely important to us. We are keeping close track of the trends in our state and on the local level. Reynolds School District will continue to take all the steps necessary to maintain a healthy environment for our students and staff in the coming months.

Sincerely,

Reynolds School District
