Volunteer Handbook

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us!

End of School Year: Please note that the end of the school year is always a busy time to get cleared as a volunteer. Processing time may be more than 15-business days after your application has been received. We strongly encourage you to submit your application over the summer or at the start of the school year.

Please contact your school for more information about volunteer opportunities.

Newcomer Program

We welcome and value all our newcomer students and families and the assets they bring to Reynolds School District, and we want to ensure that they feel safe and supported. The challenge of integrating into their new home is compounded for newcomers who attend school, since they must learn not only how to navigate a new culture socially, but also how to function effectively in an education system and language that typically differs from their prior experience.

Seal of Biliteracy

The State School Board created the Oregon State Seal of Biliteracy (OSSB) to recognize and value the native language/s students speak and bring to their English academic studies, to value language programs in schools, and to encourage students in the study of languages. This award recognizes student literacy in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in one or more World Languages, in addition to English.

Dual Language

Currently, Reynolds School District has one school that offers a bilingual program. This program is housed at Alder Elementary School.

Dual Language prioritizes closing the opportunity gap for marginalized students, one of our strategic plan goals. The goals of dual language are for students to develop high levels of language proficiency and literacy in both program languages, to demonstrate high levels of academic achievement, and to develop an appreciation for and an understanding of diverse cultures.

English Language Development

To help students achieve academic success while still learning English, Reynolds School District provides a range of educational programs and services. All schools with qualified English Language Learner (ELL) students offer services.

2021-22 Virtual Learning Enrollment

Due to anticipated interest in Virtual Learning for the 2021-2022 school year, we will have limited availability for an online learning option for fall.

If you are interested in enrolling your student in the 2021-2022 at-home Virtual Learning option,

No Summer Learning July 29–30. Click for more information. / No habrá clases de verano el 29-30 de julio. Haga clic aquí para más información.

Dangerously hot temperatures of 95-100 degrees are predicted for the Multnomah County area on July 29-30, 2021. The safety of our staff and students is a District priority.

As a precautionary measure due to the predicted heat, summer school will be cancelled on Thursday, July 29 and Friday, July 30. There will be no scheduled after school enrichment or day care activities on these two dates.

We will continue to monitor the weather and will provide an update if any changes are made to next week’s schedule.

2021-22 School Year Plans

Reynolds School District expects to reopen our schools for full-day, five-day, in-person learning this fall. We maintain those expectations in light of the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) announcement of the Resiliency Framework for the 2021-2022 school year.

There are always many details to opening school in the fall, and this year those details will include things like COVID-19 safety measures. We will continue to partner with local health authorities and will keep Reynolds families updated as we finalize those details over the summer.
