At a recent parent meeting we gave a copy of Martin's Big Words to every student in attendance. Below are some questions you could use to read the book as a family and help your students work on their reading comprehension. The questions are examples of a good way to start family reading and guide you to some questions that can be asked about any book your child is going to read. We hope you enjoy the book and that the questions can bring your family together to discuss important topics and share in a wonderful story.
My name is Mrs. Mary Starr and this is my third year as a full time teacher. Previously, I was a substitute teacher for Garrison Elementary and the other schools in Oceanside Unified. Before that, I was a student teacher for a kindergarten class at South O. In 2010, I graduated from University of California, San Diego (UCSD) with a bachelor’s degree in music. I returned to UCSD to earn my Master of Education and Multiple Subject Credential in 2012.
The state of Oregon adopted new state standards and a new state testing system in 2014. Our teachers have worked collaboratively to identify the Priority Standards in Mathematics at each grade level. These standards represent the guaranteed content. That means that every child receives in depth instruction in each of these standards. Within the standards are what are called "criteria for success". We assess students' abilities within the standard based on these success criteria.
