Reynolds High School Campus Safety Survey

As we look to next school year, a number of priorities have been identified. In addition to academic achievement, communication with families, and student attendance, many have indicated school safety as a top priority. Reynolds students, families, staff, and community have expressed student safety issues in the school building as well as the surrounding campus. As we develop specific strategies, hire additional staff, and devote new resources to improve student safety, family input is imperative to the process.

Did You Know?

  • Reynolds High School currently has a closed campus policy in place. Though it has been difficult to enforce in recent years due to staffing issues, we anticipate that a move to block schedule will allow for additional staffing and campus monitoring.
  • Under the current closed campus policy, students are expected to remain on campus throughout the school day. This includes lunch unless a student has an approved off-campus pass or are signed out at the attendance office by an approved adult. Only 11th and 12th grade students are eligible for an off-campus pass and must be on-track with grades and attendance to apply for an off-campus pass with parent permission.
  • The park next to the high school (Columbia Park/Imagination Station) is not part of the RHS campus and is an off limits area during the school day. Imagination Way is a public street and Columbia Park is owned and operated by the City of Troutdale.
  • There are a number of other areas on campus that are off limits during the school day to ensure safety, such as baseball field dugouts, hanging out in parked cars on campus, etc.
  • There has been an increase in students skipping class and hanging out in bathrooms in small groups. As a result, vandalism and other inappropriate behavior are impacting those who are trying to use bathrooms appropriately.
  • If a student is off campus or in an off limits area when emergency procedures are enacted—specifically a lockdown or lock-in-- they are unable to re-enter the school building until emergency procedures are lifted. That means, if an emergency happens in or near our school, the most secure place to be is on campus in classrooms or other supervised areas.
  • The RHS commons underwent a remodel in 2018. This doubled seating space for students in the commons/cafeteria. During the remodel, significant improvements were made to the school kitchen to ensure students receive meals quickly during meal time.
  • During the 2018 remodel, a gated courtyard was added to give students an on-campus outside eating area. This courtyard has picnic style seating and is a great option on sunny days.
