The History of Reynolds High School:

Reynolds High School opened in October of 1957. The original site of the school is now Reynolds Middle School, located on 201st Avenue. The land for the high school was donated by the largest employer in the area, the Reynolds Metals Company, which had arrived in Troutdale during World War II. The school was named after the founder of the company, Richard S. Reynolds, Sr. The first graduating class was the class of 1959.

As berry fields turned into houses, Reynolds High School needed to expand. In 1972, the Reynolds Senior Building opened, with the original building becoming known as the Junior Building. With a high school population pushing 1,800, and further growth anticipated as more housing developments came along, a second high school was built in the district. Columbia High School opened in 1976, with the first graduating class in 1979. The gold and burgundy of the Chargers marked it as the newest high school in the state and one that would have a short life. As economic recession hit the state, the planned growth and housing development did not follow, resulting in two high schools of 800-900 students. In the 1988-89 school year, the board made the decision to close one high school. After much community debate, the name Reynolds High School was retained, with the school to be located in the Columbia High School building. A new mascot, the Raider, was selected, and the green and white of the original Reynolds was added to silver and black. The new Raiders arrived at school with construction still going on, and classes moving in and out of rooms during the year.

With the change to one high school, the original Reynolds High School became Reynolds Middle School. The former Senior Building was remodeled into what is now Salish Ponds Elementary, and the Administration building. A series of bond measures meant wonderful new additions to RHS, extending the W, N, and E halls, adding a front office, building the Multipurpose Room and the Fine Arts and Communication Building, expanding the gym area, and removing atriums in the commons and the library.

In 2017, an extensive expansion and remodel of the high school began. The Main Office, Counseling Office and a secure vestibule were added to the front of the building, connecting the gym complex to the main building. Eleven classrooms were added, in addition to renovations to the College and Career Center, Science, Culinary, and Early Childhood Education.
