Enrichment

 

Youth can participate in enrichment activities to extend their learning, improve & enhance their skills and knowledge, and provides opportunities to recognize and grow their talents, strengths, and abilities. By participating in enrichment activities in high school, students can build their resumes, expand their skills, strengthen college admission applications, appreciate new experiences that encourage well-being by expanding their knowledge in school, their communities, and in life. 

Doing internships, apprenticeships & taking advantage of enrichment opportunities during high school helps prepare students for work in their fields of interest through hands-on, educational, and professional experiences.

Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement/Forensics & Fire Science/Safety

 

   FBI Teen Academy - Summer academy for rising HS juniors & seniors (11th & 12th GR in 2024-25 school year). The academy will be held at the FBI Portland field office (9109 NE Cascades Parkway, Portland, OR, 97220) from Monday, July 15th - Thursday, July 18th. 

The FBI Teen Academy program allows high school students an opportunity to get a comprehensive look into today’s FBI. Generally, each course iteration is a minimum of eight hours but can be a week-long program with blocks of instruction and demonstrations at a local field office. Students will be provided with several presentations on topics including terrorism, cyber crime, public corruption, polygraph exams, evidence response, SWAT, and the day-to-day operations of a typical FBI office. Students also learn from special agents, intelligence analysts, language specialists, and professional staff about investigative tactics that include gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and assisting with cases.

The Portland Police Cadet program is an opportunity for students (ages 16-20) who have an interest in pursuing law enforcement as a career. This program is fully supported through Portland Police Bureau (PPB), and focuses mainly on criminal justice, ethics of law enforcement, and criminal law.

The PPB Cadet Program offers:

  • Mentorship
  • Classroom instruction
  • Hands-on training

CADET ACADEMY:

The Cadet Academy is based on class content provided for full-time Officers at the State of Oregon Police Academy (DPSST) and Portland Police Bureau Advanced Academy. Many of the classes are targeted to develop an understanding and appreciation of the criminal justice system, Oregon laws and the professional ethics and skills applied to law enforcement.

 

The academy typically starts in January and ends in April.

Classes typically run 12 consecutive weeks and are held on Sundays.

CADET QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must meet age requirements: 16 – 20 years of age
    • **must be 16 prior to January 31st to apply**
  • Must be a High School or GED program graduate or be a student maintaining a 2.0 GPA or higher
  • Must have no arrests or convictions which would prohibit employment as a Portland Police Officer
  • Must possess or have the ability to immediately obtain a valid driver’s license or instructional permit and maintain a good driving record
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation and interview

APPLICATION PROCESS / BECOMING A PPB CADET:

  • Must meet all qualifications and submit a complete, properly filled out application
  • Must pass the background investigation
  • Must successfully pass an interview
  • Must graduate from Cadet Academy
  • Must complete probationary process

   City of Gresham Fire Cadet Program

 

 

The Gresham Fire Cadet program provides the opportunity for motivated young men and women to develop leadership, teamwork and responsibility skills while exploring the firefighting profession. Many former cadets are now career firefighters or respond with volunteer fire agencies.

Qualifications

Cadet applicants must:

  • Be between the ages of 15-20
  • Maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5

Application process

  • After submitting an application, prospective cadets will be contacted by email before our next First Nighter event.
  • During this event, applicants will be interviewed by a panel of their peers and will participate in a physical abilities test.
  • Before final acceptance into the program a background check will be performed, and proof of GPA must be submitted.
  • Because of the amount of training required, the program accepts new members only once a year. Applications are accepted year-round. 

Training

Once accepted into the program, cadets will learn about the tools, techniques and skills needed to assist with fireground operations. Once basic training is accomplished, cadets can respond with career crews to emergency calls in support roles and perform non-emergency tasks according to their training.

Volunteer at Legacy Mt. Hood Medical Center

At Legacy Mt. Hood Medical Center, volunteers are extraordinary! 

 

 

 

Each volunteer brings unique skills & talents to the team, whether it's greeting visitors, assisting customers in the Gift Shop, rounding to patient rooms, utilizing their electronic records database, or assisting with patient discharges.

Legacy MHMC Volunteer Requirements:

  • Minimum 6 months commitment/one regular 4-hour shift/week (total 100 hrs)
  • 16+ years old
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19

Volunteer placements are made after the new volunteer orientation and interview. Days, weekends, and evening shifts available in a variety of departments.

Environmental Internships

 

Tappin' Roots - Environmental internship program   (w/ paid stipend) for Black-identified high school students in the Greater Portland area.

Tappin' Roots (TR) was created by a collaborative group of Black and Indigenous-led organizations, including ELSO Inc., The Blueprint Foundation, and Friends of Tryon Creek. 

TR seeks to train and empower the next generation of environmental leaders and community leaders using:

Storytelling   

Mentorship   

Career exploration   

Place-based learning   

Healing practices   

Tappin' Roots partners hope to connect young Black Oregonians closer to nature, and closer to their cultural history. Each intern is eligible to receive up to $4,000 based on their participation in the following:

  • Orientation
  • Monthly Symposiums 
  • Mandatory Training Week 
  • Hours worked with their assigned partner organization

After orientation, interns will participate in monthly career and environmental justice symposiums led by professionals of color. Learning opportunities will include Indigenous-based Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Oregon's Black history. They will implement culturally relevant skills and knowledge they acquire to educate others about the natural world.

Interns will participate in summer nature-based education work with one of the community based partners, including one week of mandatory training.
