English Language Development

To help students achieve academic success while still learning English, Reynolds School District provides a range of educational programs and services. All schools with qualified English Language Learner (ELL) students offer services.

How do students qualify for English Language Services?

Students are initially identified through a language use survey form that is used at registration. The purpose of the Language Use Survey is to help Reynold’s School District determine if your child qualifies for additional Title III supports in language instruction for English learners.

The State of Oregon honors the language and culture of its people and respects the over 166 languages in our schools, and recognizes that:

  • Language is a key component of each person’s cultural identity,
  • Heritage and primary languages are instrumental in student academic and cultural success, and
  • Students who are multilingual/multicultural may have an advantage over students with a single language and are valued in career placements.

What services does my student receive?

Reynolds School district has a legal obligation to serve English learners to ensure appropriate action is taken to overcome language barriers that impeded equal participation in their instructional program. Therefore, we ensure students have access to core instruction with their classroom teacher and receive supports on acquiring the English language as outlined below.

Educational Approach to Core

The elementary schools in Reynold's approach to help students access core instruction is through sheltered instruction where the teacher scaffolds and differentiates using sheltering techniques. Reynolds School District’s goal is to have all teachers trained in sheltering techniques.

Educational Approach to Language Acquisition

ELD specialists at the elementary level push-in to general education classrooms and instruct ELs utilizing CIELD (Content Integrated English Language Development). CIELD is a model for language and literacy instruction that uses high leverage visual strategies practiced in collaboration with the general education teachers within the mainstream classroom. At the elementary level, CIELD pairs strategies from Project GLAD and other models of sheltered instruction with a district-created curriculum aligned to our current English Language Arts curriculum.

Grades 6-8

Educational Approach to Core

The middle schools in Reynold's approach to help students access core instruction is through sheltered instruction where the teacher scaffolds and differentiates using constructing meaning strategies or sheltering techniques. Reynolds School District’s goal is to have all teachers trained in sheltering techniques.

Educational Approach to Language Acquisition

Middle schools in Reynolds School District approach language instruction by providing a fully integrated learning experience that addresses the English Language Proficiency standards alongside common core content standards. Each of the four domains of proficiency are explicitly taught and assessed alongside core content. Facilitating English development through content allows students to demonstrate output that meets the demands of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) while fostering a culturally responsive program of instruction.

Grades 9-12

We are at a crucial moment when we must rise up to change the status quo for our Black, Brown, and Native youth now more than ever before. This is something they both deserve and require. We are educators who are dedicated to disrupting existing educational disparities and deconstructing the status quo. As we head into 2021-22, we're working hard to keep our commitment to our Black, Brown, and Native students to be global citizens who are linguistically, socially, and culturally equipped for success in school and beyond. We made a few decisions that are representative of our Theory of Action and district strategic plan focusing on marginalized students as we rethink what it means to support student success.

Our charge in 9-12 is to move students into academic success on track for graduation.
