Update from Bremik Construction
October 12, 2017

"Our crew is making great progress at Troutdale Elementary! All foundations have been poured, as well as the concrete slab for the gymnasium and one of the classroom pod buildings. Fun Fact: Over 558 cubic yards of concrete has been poured to date. Did you know that one yard of concrete weighs 4,000 pounds?! That’s how much a great white shark weighs!" Click here to see the full update (including a fun Halloween crossword puzzle) from Bremik Construction.

The sunny summer weather allowed construction companies to make good progress on the new school buildings in the Reynolds School District, but not quite enough to keep thousands of children from attending school in construction zones this year.

"The project teams, including district and building staff, have all been working closely to accommodate occupancy during construction," said Linda Florence, Reynolds superintendent.

Reynolds is building three new elementary schools — Troutdale, Fairview and Wilkes — while Reynolds High School is undergoing a major expansion and upgrade. All this is being paid for with money from a $125 million facilities bond that voters approved for the Reynolds School District in May 2015.

"Significant progress has been made with all phases (of construction), and the projects remain on track for completion in the fall of 2018," Florence said.

A giant steel "hand" grabbed the roof of the gym of Troutdale Elementary School Thursday, gave it a powerful tug, and the wall started tumbling down. The next big swipe revealed the black curtains of the gym stage dangling in the breeze, another big pull and the curtains came down into the pile of rubble.

The Troutdale Elementary gym is being demolished to make way for the new Troutdale Elementary School being built next to the old school. Students will go to class in the old school building during the upcoming 2017-18 school year — minus the gym — as the new school is being built. Students will start at the new school in fall 2018 and the remainder of the old building will be demolished.

The price tag for the new school, which will accommodate 425 students, is about $32 million.

A gaggle of folks from the Troutdale Historical Society gathered on a cool, overcast morning last week to salvage some of the beautiful, old wood from the gym floor at Troutdale Elementary School before the entire structure is torn down this week.

The salvaged wood will go to the woodworking and construction classes at Reynolds High School. Students will use the wood for projects, and teacher Erich Schneider hopes they will be able to construct mementos for former students and staff who want a token of their time at Troutdale Elementary.

"There is a lot of interest in having something from the school," Schneider said.

Eight new or largely remodeled schools on their way in Reynolds and Gresham-Barlow School districts.

A construction worker jabs a 90-pound jackhammer into the concrete floor in what used to be the health room of Reynolds High School. A gaggle of workers grab up the slabs of concrete weighing hundreds of pounds and sling them onto a hand truck for removal.

This labor is a tiny part of the $416.2 million school building boom fueled by bonds voters approved for the Reynolds and Gresham-Barlow School Districts. More than 8,000 kids attend the eight local schools that will be completely replaced or substantially remodeled, and two dozen more will be improved. Voters gave a thumbs up to a $125 million bond for Reynolds School District in May 2015 and a $291.2 million bond for the Gresham-Barlow School District in November 2016.

Update from the Local & Diverse Partnership Program
March 21, 2017

The 2015 Bond Program is a $125 million program to construct major improvements to schools in the Reynolds School District. Construction is beginning this spring and bid packages are out or coming out soon. The District wants the community to be aware of contracting opportunities as the project progress.

The district invites all contractors and businesses to a Meet & Certify event on March 28. The three construction teams for the Bond Projects, Skanska, Bremik and LCG Pence, will attend. Meet the project managers, learn about contracting opportunities, and get information on COBID certification.

For more information about the 2015 Bond Program and current bid packages, visit www.reynolds.k12.or.us/bondprojects/contracting-partnerships.
