Attendance Matters!

Every Day Matters

Attendance matters for students at all grade levels! Students who attend school regularly have a better chance of building a strong foundation as they move from preschool/kindergarten to high school, and are more likely to read at grade level. Children who are reading at grade level by the end of third grade are more likely to graduate on time.

On the other hand, students who are chronically absent are at risk of falling behind. “Chronically absent” means a student is missing 10% of the school year. It doesn’t matter whether the absences are excused or unexcused – each day represents lost time.

Reynolds School District, along with the State of Oregon, is working to improve attendance through a combination of efforts. These include improving data collection; removing barriers for students, caregivers, and families; creating a school culture where all students are connected to an adult; and leveraging community partners to build a cross-community initiatives that raise awareness around attending school regularly and post-graduation success.

Your child's regular attendance in school encourages academic and social-emotional success. Together, families, educators, and community members can support a child's attendance and help each student stay on the path to success. In Oregon, students are considered chronically absent when they miss 10% of the school year, or 18 days. Your family can use the document below to keep track of missed days and make sure that your child is maintaining regular attendance. Try to stay in the green boxes!
