Wendell Wetzel (1978-1982):  As a state championship gymnast at Columbia High School, Wendell Wetzel has the distinction of earning more individual state titles than any athlete in Reynolds School District history.  During his junior and senior seasons, Wendell amasses 14 first and second place state finishes; including 10 individual state titles.   Wendell completed his storied athletic career by leading Columbia to the school’s first team state championship. Wendell is remembered as an elite competitor whose own personal commitment to excellence helped motivate his teammates to be their very best.

Mike Galloway (1969-2003):  Mike Galloway came to the Reynolds School District in 1969, and during a career that spanned 34 years, he served as a coach in an unprecedented 72 high school sport seasons.  In an age of specialization for coaches and athletes, Mike’s commitment to thousands of Lancers, Chargers and Raiders is truly extraordinary, and likely to never be surpassed.  Mike’s dedication to the students of the Reynolds School District was also evident in his contributions as a classroom teacher and counselor.

Jerry Kalapus (1961-1995):  When Jerry Kalapus began his teaching and coaching career in the Reynolds School District in 1961 he brought with him a strong background of success in athletics.  In addition to winning the singles tennis state title as a senior from Medford High School in 1955, Jerry had attended Pacific University on a basketball scholarship.  Early on, Jerry offered his expertise and competitive spirit to Lancer basketball program as an assistant coach.  However, it was in tennis that Jerry made his most significant contributions.  During a coaching career that spanned four decades, Jerry’s teams won 11 conference titles and he was named coach of the year four times.

Mike DeBois (1962-1966):  By the time Mike DeBois graduated in 1966, he had established himself as one the greatest three-sport athletes in Reynolds High School’s brief history, and 47 years later, Mike’s accomplishments have stood the test of time.  Throughout his high school career, Mike competed in football, basketball and track and field, and although he made significant contributions in both basketball, and track, he shined the brightest when he was on the gridiron.  Mike’s former coaches and teammates remember him as smart and highly competitive natural athlete, whose best physical attributes were his exceptional speed and quickness.  However, as the Lancer’s entered the 1965 football season, it would be Mike’s natural leadership ability that helped drive his team to the Wilco League Title and a hard-earned place in the state championship game.

The 1965 Lancer Football Team:  The fall of 1965 promised an exciting season for the Reynolds Lancers football team.  Under the direction of second year coach, Dutch Kawasoe, the 1964 squad had compiled an impressive 6-1-2 record, and the return of future all-state players, Dennis Walters and Butch Woodward, filled the Lancer faithful with hope of another successful campaign and an opportunity to advance into the post-season.  The Lancers opened the ’65 season with blow-out victories over Canby and The Dalles, but their first true test came in week three when they traveled to Jesuit.  The Crusaders held a 7-6 advantage at the half, and the third quarter continued the defensive battle until Mike DeBois and Mike Pattock scored touchdowns to put the game away 19-7; establishing Reynolds as one of the top teams in the state. The Lancers continued their dominance of the Wilco League; running their record to a perfect 9-0 and taking home the conference trophy before moving on to the state playoffs.  The 1965 state championship was billed by many as a “David and Goliath” match up.  With an enrollment nearly four times greater than Reynolds, the David Douglas Scots were heavily favored in the contest at Multnomah Stadium.  And while the Scots went on to take the state trophy with a 20-13 victory, the mighty Lancers battled to the bitter end as Orvil Tetz hauled in a 62 yard touchdown pass from Woodward on the game’s final play. The 11-1 record posted by the 1965 Lancers still remains the standard by which all Reynolds School District football teams are measured.  Even today, those who were fortunate to share in that magical season consider it to be one of the greatest eras in the school district’s history.  In addition to the tremendous pride the football program brought to the Reynolds community, there was a sense of camaraderie and spirit that has seldom been matched.
