New School Start & End Times - 2024-25

Dear Reynolds Families,

This communication is to inform you of the new school start and end times for the 2024-25 school year.  

The purpose of these changes is threefold: to improve bus on-time arrivals and departures from schools by shortening bus routes, to support working families in the mornings when there is a lack of alternative child care for younger students, and to better align school schedules to child and adolescent health and sleep needs.

We are now fully staffed with bus drivers enabling us to increase the number of bus routes. This change will enable shorter ride times and more on-time arrivals and departures from schools. Given adolescents’ natural shift toward later sleep and wake times, shifting school start times for secondary later has been proven to make a difference. After the Seattle School District delayed the start of their public high schools by nearly an hour, from 7:50 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., students’ daily median sleep time increased by 34 minutes a day, and grades increased 4.5 percent. This change also enables older students to be home when younger students get ready for school. For families that need after-school childcare, the SUN program will remain available at our schools. Mondays will continue as late start days to enable teacher professional development and preparation time. 

We understand that time changes affect everyone so we are communicating this as early as possible. We hope that this early notification gives our families time to plan and prepare for the start of the 2024-25 school year.
