Reynolds High School Welcomes Veterans to Annual Living History Day Event
Reynolds High Continues Tradition of Honoring Veterans
Veterans who have served in any branch of the United States Military are invited to attend the Reynolds High School Living History Day on Thursday, November 8, 2012 from 8:30 am to 2:10 pm. Veterans will be speaking to classes and will be honored at an all school assembly and luncheon. Reynolds High School is pleased to welcome and honor Veterans as part of the history, social studies and cultural awareness offerings. Visitors and media representatives should check in at the Main Office thirty (30) minutes prior to scheduled start to receive proper identification.
Two of the featured speakers are: Holocaust Survivor and author Alter Wiener and Tuskegee Airman Ben “Flaps” Berry. When Alter Winer was 13 his father was brutally murdered by the German invaders of Poland. At the age of 15 he was deported to a Forced Labor Camp. Upon liberation, by the Russian Army in May 1945, Alter weighed 80 lbs. Wiener's autobiography has a message of where prejudice may lead and how tolerance is imperative.
Ben Berry earned a Congressional Gold Medal of Honor and has authored two screenplays and three books. He grew up in the Deep South where he was exposed to suggestions that he was inferior. Berry deigned the first computerized “fly-by-wire” flight control system, which has become the worldwide standard for military and commercial aircraft. He has worked as an aerospace enginee and world trader.
Reynolds High School has a strong tradition of honoring Veterans at the Living History Day. The most recent event welcomed hundreds of veteran attendees. Students from the Leadership and JROTC programs plan and run the event. Reynolds High School is located at 1698 SW Cherry Park Road in Troutdale, Oregon. The school serves the cities of Fairview, Troutdale, Wood Village and portions of Portland and Gresham.
