The Time Study Committee has considered the options for school start and end times and will be recommending Option 2 to the Reynolds School Board. Option 2 would, if adopted by the School Board, have elementary students start school at 7:30 am and end at 2:00 pm. High School students would start at 7:55 am and end at 2:50 pm, and Middle School students would begin at 8:30 am and end at 3:15 pm.
The Board of Education will consider the recommendation at the April 8, 2010 Regular Business Meeting. The committee membership includes parents and employees from teaching, classified and administrative positions. The committee worked in three sub-committees and evaluated the options. Each subcommittee developed a list of pros and cons for option 1 and option 2.
Pros for Option 2:
All students ended school before 3:30 pm.
Childcare needs were best met.
High school students in athletics and with late-night shifts were least impacted. Atheletes aren’t missing as much school for travel to contests and employees aren’t reporting to school too early.
The end of the day time could accomodate activities for middle and elementary students.
All elementary schools start and end at the same time to allow for District-wide professional development opportunities.
Cons for Option 2:
Fewer instructional minutes than Option 1. The overall total is less.
Possible increase in tardiness at elementary and high school.
Possible afternoon day care issues.
By a consensus vote, two of the three sub-committees preferred option 2. The Board will receive the information at the Workshop meeting on March 18 and will consider the recommendation for action at the April 8 Business Meeting.
