Athletics and Activities Participation Rules and Discipline Procedures

The opportunity to represent one’s school in interscholastic competition is a privilege not afforded to all students.  With this privilege comes a higher expectation for attendance, academic achievement, and a greater responsibility for citizenship; at school functions and in the community at large.

H.B. Lee School Athletics Contract

It is the role of the H.B. Lee Middle School Athletics to provide scholar-athletes with the opportunity to develop their athletic abilities to full potential while safeguarding their physical welfare in an environment that promotes both high academic standards and the development of leadership capabilities. At H.B. Lee Middle School, our coaches stress the importance of participating in sports to allow for opportunities to be successful in multiple areas. These objectives are best achieved through a broad-based program, which provides equal opportunity for all its scholar-athletes regardless of race, color, age, sex, disability, religion, ethnic or national origin, or sexual orientation and which is administered in accordance with the highest principles of H.B. Lee Middle School while maintaining the expectations of the Reynolds School District.

Participation in sports is a privilege!

Each student must have a physical on file in order to play.

Athlete Expectations:

  • I will work daily to improve skills and be an asset to the team.
  • I understand that attendance at games and practice are mandatory. If absent, it is my responsibility to contact my coach prior to practice. Unexcused absences may result in dismissal from a team.
  • I understand that my participation is a commitment to myself, my team, and my coach and that if I quit the team, I may not be eligible for any other sport at H.B. Lee Middle School during the 2022-2023 school year.
  • I will wear the provided H.B. Lee MS athletic uniform during the athletic period and all practices.
  • I will be on time to all practices and events.
  • I understand that the coach has the sole responsibility to decide the makeup of the team and who will play.
  • I will not wear any jewelry during practices or athletic events.
  • I will not use my cell phone in a locker room, during athletic practice, or during an athletic event.

Academic Policy:

  • Grade checks will occur frequently.
  • Athletes may be required to participate in study hall as determined by the school and coach to work on homework, missing work, or study.
  • Athletes who have failing grades during a grade check period will be temporarily suspended from the activity until the next grading period.
  • In the event that an athlete is dismissed from school early to attend an athletic contest, the athlete is still responsible for all classwork or homework for that day.
  • If failing grades continue, the athlete may be removed from athletics and not allowed to try out/participate until passing grades are obtained.

Behavior Policy:

  • I will show respect at all times to all players, coaches, and spectators.
  • I understand that any unsportsmanlike conduct or other violation of this code may result in disciplinary action by the coach and/or campus administration.
  • I will abide by the H.B. Lee Middle School Code of Conduct.
  • I understand that any H.B. Lee Middle School athlete ejected or removed from a game will be benched from participating in the next scheduled game.
  • I understand if I am placed in In School or Out of School Suspension (ISS or OSS), I may sit out during the next athletic event. If repeated offenses occur, the athlete may be removed from athletics.
  • I understand if I am placed in H.B. Lee Middle School disciplinary consequence, I may be removed from athletics upon my return.

Playing Time:

Each player on the team has been chosen because they are capable of playing at the middle school level. The coaching staff will strictly distribute playing time based upon ability, attitude, work ethic, and game situations. Players, parents, and coaches should only be worried about the team as a whole, not focusing on individual statistics. Our goal is to become the best TEAM that we can be.

Parent Expectations:

  • I will support my child in performing and progressing at a level consistent with his/her ability.
  • I will be a positive role model at all athletic events.
  • I will praise my student and encourage a positive attitude at all times.
  • I will be punctual when dropping off and picking up my student.
  • I will contact the coach in an appropriate manner to address any concerns. If my concerns are not addressed to my satisfaction, I will follow the proper chain of command for addressing those concerns; campus athletic coordinator, campus principal, District athletic director.
  • I acknowledge that my athlete’s photos could be used for showcasing our athletes in the community and their field of play. If I feel that I would not like my athlete to participate in photos, I will contact my child's coach in writing at the beginning of the athletic season.

Team/School Rules

The following conduct violations will lead to appropriate disciplinary action to be determined by the coach or advisor.  The degree of discipline will be in relationship to the severity of the violation and may include school-related consequences such as suspension or expulsion.

  1. Team/School related — insubordination, bullying or harassment, fighting, unsportsmanlike conduct, theft, vandalism, or any other misbehavior while at school, attending practices, contests, or other team functions.
  2. Community-related — defacing property, stealing public or personal equipment.
  3. Other forms of misconduct will be dealt with according to the circumstances and severity of the incident.
  4. Disciplinary action in cases of flagrant and/or willful misconduct will be taken by the coach or advisor, athletic director, and principal in a meeting with the student and parent or guardian.

Athletic Code

The possession or use of tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, controlled substances, and performance-enhancing drugs is strictly prohibited. This includes Electronic Cigarettes (E-Cigarettes) and Vapor Pens regardless of their contents. This prohibition also includes being present at an event in which any of the above-mentioned substances are accessible.  If a student unintentionally finds him or herself in the presence of prohibited substances, they must demonstrate that they made every effort to immediately remove themselves from the situation in order to avoid consequences.

The athletic code will be in effect from the moment the student and parent sign the athletic clearance form, and will remain in effect for the remainder of the student’s high school career; 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

  1. The first offense will result in a suspension from competition in not less than twenty-five percent (25%) of the regularly scheduled contests for the current or next season in which the student participates.  If the entire length of the suspension cannot be completed in the current sport season, the suspension will be fulfilled during the athlete’s next opportunity for competition.  Suspensions will be imposed in complete contest increments only.  During the suspension period, athletes must attend all team functions and fulfill their duties as assigned by the head coach.  Quitting the team after a suspension has been imposed nullifies the suspension period.
  2. The second offense will result in a suspension from competition in not less than fifty percent (50%) of the regularly scheduled contests as described above.
  3. The third offense will result in a suspension from competition for not less than one calendar year.  During the year-long suspension, the athlete may clear for practice participation at the discretion of the head coach and athletics director.
  4. The fourth offense will result in a suspension from competition and participation for the remainder of the student’s high school career.

After the first offense only, athletes may reduce the length of the suspension to not less than ten percent (10%) of the regularly scheduled contests if they choose to cooperate fully with school officials, follow recommendations for treatment, and complete 20 hours of approved community service.

Students who voluntarily seek assistance from school officials for substance abuse issues may avoid consequences if they do so in the absence of pending investigations, accusations, or criminal charges.

Transportation Guidelines

During the course of the school year, your child may be involved in athletic events and school activities in which the Reynolds School District does not offer transportation.  In these instances, parents and students will be responsible for their own transportation.

In many activities, the Reynolds School District only offers one-way transportation (no return bus) to the following schools: Centennial, David Douglas, Gresham, and Sam Barlow High Schools.  Any time a return trip is not provided, parents are expected to pick their children up after the game.  If at any point an update needs to be made to the transportation release, parents/guardians must submit a transportation release addendum form to the Athletic Office (hard copy or electronically).  Players who are not approved to drive themselves are required to ride the bus any time transportation is provided – including one-way trips.

Two-way trips are always provided in the following sports and activities: cross-country, football, track and field, and wrestling; except on weekends or holidays.  Any time a two-way trip is provided, all players and coaches are required to ride the bus to and from the event unless prior arrangements are made with the head coach.
