Jim Luening Memorial Gym Dedication

On Thursday, November 8 at 6pm, the gymnasium will be named and dedicated in memory of Jim Luening. Jim Luening began working with Reynolds School District as physical education teacher starting in 1970 and worked at Rockwood, Reynolds and Walt Morey Middle Schools. He was the first teacher hired for the Walt Morey Middle School staff and he served as athletic director at Walt Morey Middle School, from where he retired in 2007.

Mr. Luening was instrumental in establishing the mascot, school colors and designing the gym at Walt Morey when it opened. During his time as an athletic director at Walt Morey, the school had many all league honors and championships.  As an athlete at Roosevelt High School, Jim Luening participated in sports; and he held the hurdles record for the Portland Interscholastic League until recently. He was inducted posthumously into the PIL Hall of Fame on October 14, 2012.

Mr. Luening passed away in February 2011. His widow Penny will receive an award at the dedication event. The Walt Morey Orchestra will perform and light refreshments will be provided. The media and public are invited.
