Dear Reynolds Middle School Families:

It’s hard to believe that we’ll soon be starting another year at Reynolds Middle School.  We continue to make positive strides both in terms of academics and overall school culture.  Similarly, this past year we continued to take positive steps toward reducing disproportionality in student discipline data.  As I’ve said before many times, to close achievement gaps for our students, we need them to stay out of trouble and in class!

We always push for continuous improvement and with that in mind, we will continue with three important initiatives Reynolds Middle School started in the last few years.  First, all students will be required to have organized three-inch “Lancer” binders that contain all of the supplies they need to be successful in school.  At regular intervals, we will check student binders to ensure that students are staying organized, the idea being that organization in and of itself will contribute to greater academic success.  Secondly, we are still requiring students to turn off their cell phones and other electronic devices upon entering the school at the start of the day and place the devices in their lockers.  Cell phones and other electronic technology are only to come out of lockers at the end of the school day and are only to be used once students are safely outside the school building.  Finally, we will continue with our Foundations period the first 16 minutes of each day in which students will meet with a single teacher and a group of no more than 25 students.  Again, the idea will be to set students up for success by helping them build strong relationships with at least one trusted adult at RMS and to assist with organization, goal setting, and the like.  With regard to these initiatives or any other initiatives we introduce, our goal is to build a rich learning environment for each and every student, safe and free from distraction.  We believe that building school culture and relationships are as an important as anything we do!

New this year as part of a Reynolds School District grant from Verizon and Digital Promise, each student at our three middle schools will receive an IPAD that they will take with them to and from school every day.  Additionally, each student will have WIFI capacity on their device both at home and school, provided free of charge by Verizon.  In an increasingly digital world, we believe the technology provided will serve to augment the quality of instruction each student will receive in our middle schools.  IPADs will be distributed to students on Wednesday, September 25, at our annual Welcome Back Open House.  For more specific information about the IPAD grant, please see the link below:

Additionally, we are hosting a Parent Academy in which parents can complete necessary paperwork associated with their students receiving IPADs.  The dates and times for the Parent Academy are listed below:

Also, if you’ve driven by Reynolds Middle School this summer, you may have noticed the construction taking place in the field adjacent to the playground.  The Portland Timbers in conjunction with U.S. Soccer, have funded a futsal court that our students will have access to both during recess and P.E. classes.  Additionally, the court will serve the community outside of school hours.  A grand opening for the new futsal court is slated for Wednesday, September 18. 

School starts for 6th graders Tuesday, September 3, and Wednesday, September 4, for 7th and 8th graders.  Classes will continue to run from 7:30 am until 2:15 pm.  I look forward to reacquainting myself with RMS families and connecting with new members of the community as we continue our journey together.  I’m excited to facilitate Reynolds Middle School’s continued push to become a place we can all be even more proud of-a model middle school in the Portland area and across the state.  We have made significant strides the last few years in accelerating academic growth for our students, and plan to continue on the same pathway.

Estimadas familias de Reynolds Middle School:

Es difícil creer que pronto comenzaremos otro año más en Reynolds Middle School. Continuamos dando pasos positivos tanto en términos académicos como en la cultura escolar en general. El año pasado también dimos pasos positivos para reducir la desproporción en los datos de disciplina estudiantil. Como lo he dicho muchas veces, para cerrar las brechas en el rendimiento estudiantil necesitamos que nuestros estudiantes se mantengan fuera de problemas y en clase.

Siempre buscamos la mejora continua y con esto en mente, continuaremos con tres iniciativas importantes que Reynolds Middle School inició en los últimos años. Primero, todos los estudiantes tienen que traer diariamente sus carpetas de tres pulgadas ("Lancer binders")  bien organizadas y con  los útiles que necesitan para tener éxito en la escuela. A intervalos regulares estaremos revisando estas carpetas para asegurarnos que los estudiantes se mantengan organizados; la idea es que la organización en sí misma contribuirá a un mayor éxito académico. Segundo, continuaremos requiriendo que los estudiantes apaguen sus teléfonos celulares y otros aparatos electrónicos al ingresar a la escuela al comienzo del día y los guarden en sus casilleros. Los teléfonos celulares y otros aparatos electrónicos deben mantenerse guardados en los casilleros hasta el final del día escolar y usarse solamente una vez que los estudiantes estén fuera del edificio. Tercero, continuaremos con la clase de Fundamentos los primeros 16 minutos de cada día. Durante este período, los estudiantes se reunirán con un solo maestro, en un grupo de no más de 25 estudiantes. La idea es preparar a los estudiantes para el éxito ayudándolos a cultivar relaciones sólidas con al menos un adulto de confianza en RMS, a mantenerse organizados y a establecer objetivos. Nuestro objetivo con estas iniciativas y con cualquier otra iniciativa que propongamos, es crear un entorno de aprendizaje rico, seguro y sin distracciones para cada uno de nuestros estudiantes. ¡Creemos que fomentar las relaciones y crear una cultura escolar es tan importante como todas las otras cosas que hacemos aquí.

Además, como parte de la subvención de Verizon y Digital Promise, recibida por Reynolds School District, todos los estudiante de las tres escuelas intermedias recibirán un iPad que traerán a la escuela todos los días. También, cada estudiante tendrá WIFI en el iPad tanto en la casa como en la escuela, cortesía de Verizon. En un mundo cada vez más digital, creemos que la tecnología proporcionada servirá para incrementar la calidad de la instrucción en nuestras escuelas intermedias. Los iPad se distribuirán a los estudiantes el miércoles 25 de septiembre durante “La noche de Bienvenida”. Además, si ha pasado por Reynolds Middle School este verano, es posible que haya notado los trabajos de construcción adyacente al patio de recreo. Portland Timbers junto con U.S. Soccer, han financiado una cancha de fútbol salón (futsal).  Los estudiantes tendrán acceso tanto durante el recreo como durante las clases de educación física. P.E. La cancha estará disponible para la comunidad fuera del horario escolar. La inauguración de la nueva cancha de fútbol sala está programada para el miércoles 18 de septiembre.

El inicio de clases para los alumnos de sexto grado es el martes 3 de septiembre y el miércoles 4 de septiembre para los alumnos de séptimo y octavo grado. El horario de clases es de 7:30 am a 2:15 pm.

Espero volver a relacionarme con las familias de RMS y ponerme en contacto con nuevos miembros de la comunidad a medida que continuamos juntos este viaje. Estoy muy contento de poder facilitar el esfuerzo continuo de Reynolds Middle School para llegar a convertirnos en un lugar del que todos podamos estar aún más orgullosos: una escuela intermedia modelo en el área de Portland y en todo el estado. En los últimos años hemos logrado un gran avance en el crecimiento académico de nuestros estudiantes y planeamos continuar por el mismo camino.
