January 2018 Athlete of the Month

Emma Callaway (12), Swimming

Emma is a 3-time letter winner and 2-time team captain. She is the perfect example of a student-athlete with how she is able to successfully balance her school responsibilities and her athletic responsibilities. She holds a 3.91 cumulative GPA and a key member of both the water polo team and the swim team. She is always willing to advocate for others and continues every day to be a true leader among her peers.

Joseph Mercado (11), Wrestling

Joseph is a true competitor. He has a huge motor and a "no quitting" attitude. He has also developed into a leader of the team. Other teammates look to Joseph for leadership. Every day at practice or competition, Joseph is always trying to improve his skills. Joseph wrestled in the toughest weight class at the Mt. Hood Conference district meet. He had some bad breaks and found himself in 5^th place and was discouraged about his efforts. He got the opportunity to wrestle back against the 4^th place wrestler and embraced this opportunity. He went out and completely dominated his opponent and earned his spot to go to the State Tournament. Joseph was also a part of the football team and showed a great work ethic. Joseph also recently earned the title of a scholar-athlete for the Mt Hood Conference Wrestling.
