Press Release from Reynolds School District
June 21, 2018

Innovative playgrounds at the three new elementary schools will teach kids about the local landscape and other educational topics.

Forests, Salmon, Volcanoes and other Local Features

Among the network of slides, walkways, monkey bars and other interactive features, each playground will have eleven custom-designed educational panels focused on aspects of the students’ environment and community. For example, one explains the energy web of a Pacific Northwest forest, while another follows the journey of a salmon’s life cycle. Maps allow kids to see where they live in relation to different geographic scales (our Oregon community, the United States, the Earth and the solar system).

Local Designs by a Local Team

The unique playground designs come from the imaginations of Portland-based father and son team, Wildwood Playgrounds. Started in 1978, the local business creates play structures that are not only fun and safe, but that also foster physical and cognitive learning, child development and sense of community. The company has a reputation for quality and sustainability. They have specified another Oregon company, Playcraft Systems, to manufacture the materials for each playground.

Having designed dozens of playgrounds throughout the region, Wildwood continues to push their work forward in their projects for the District. “These will be the most innovative playgrounds I’ve ever designed!” crowed Steve Lebwohl, founder and head designer for Wildwood, “They are truly customized for the communities they will serve.”

Next Steps

The District’s board approved the playground proposal in April and construction will take place this summer. The playgrounds are part of the larger elementary school construction projects funded through a 2015 voter-approved school bond. The new playgrounds will debut at the elementary school Grand Opening Celebrations this August, which will be the first opportunity for the public to tour and explore the new schools. Details about these community events can be found on the bond project website: https://www.reynolds.k12.or.us/bondprojects

About the Reynolds School District Bond Projects

The District is designing and constructing major improvements to our schools. This work includes replacing Troutdale, Fairview and Wilkes Elementary Schools; significantly updating and renovating Reynolds High School; and providing safety and security upgrades to all schools. Funding for these projects is provided by a bond measure passed in 2015. All schools will be move-in ready by fall of 2018.
