I have the pleasure of being a third grade teacher again this year. I am looking forward to a very good year full of fun and learning. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself and what you can expect this year.

I grew up here in Portland and attended school in Reynolds School District from sixth grade on. My sixth grade year was spent at Fairview Elementary School. From there, I attended Rockwood Middle School for two years. Next, I went to Columbia High School for my freshman and sophomore years. Reynolds and Columbia merged into one high school after these two years, and Columbia was renamed Reynolds. In 1998, I student taught here at Wilkes and graduated from Concordia University. The next school year, I began teaching third grade at Wilkes. I love the staff, students, and the community and parent support that is present here at Wilkes. I enjoy the excitement for learning that students at this age bring to school.

I am looking forward to a great school year! You can expect that your child will spend the majority of the day receiving instruction and practice at his/her instructional level in reading, writing, and math. In addition to these subjects, your child will study ecosystems, weather, life cycles of plants and animals and their roles in our world, nutrition, dental health, drug awareness and prevention, and communities. These are just a few of the areas we will cover.

To supplement these studies, I hope to take a field trip during the course of the year. We are hoping to go to Franz Bakery in April. Field trips add a lot to the curriculum and make learning come alive, but they are only possible with a great deal of parent support and help. It is my hope that you will consider helping us out by attending our field trip or volunteering to help out in our classroom. I will try to give you plenty of notice as to the date and time of any field trips, should they be possible this year.

My classroom expectations are simple and basic. I expect each student to do his/her part to make and keep our classroom a positive leaning environment for everyone. I always ask students to make the best choices for themselves, following the guidelines of being responsible, respectful, and safe. Positive choices, consistent with our classroom rules, will be continually acknowledged and/or rewarded. I expect that each student works hard, completes assignment on time, and takes an active role in his/her own learning.

If you ever have questions or concerns, please give me a call at school at 503-491-2724, ext 4660. If we all work together, I know this will be a great year!
