Davis Elementary Newsletters 2023-2024

Oregon state law requires all districts to inform parents that a form is available from the Oregon Department of Education that provides the opportunity to opt your child out of the ELA and Math assessments. The form must be filed annually and is available in multiple languages.

Parents must return completed form to the school office. This is an annual requirement.

Incomplete or modified forms will not be accepted.

Parents may not write in additional assessments on the state opt-out form.

Forms will be accepted at any time. If a form is submitted after a student has begun testing, the student will stop testing but the items answered up to that point will be scored. The student will receive a performance level and/or overall score based on the incomplete submission.

The purpose of the assessments is to show individual student growth over time and to provide supplementary student-specific data that teachers can use to ensure each and every child is on track to reach goals for college and career readiness.

Parent Exemptions for Kindergarten, Science, ELPA Summative, Alt-ELPA and ELPA Screener, and Extended Assessments (2022-2023 Parent Exemption Form will be posted soon)

Under Oregon Administrative Rule 581-022-1910, a "school may excuse students from a state required program or learning activity, where necessary, to accommodate students' disabilities or religious beliefs." To comply with state requirements, an application must be completed in its entirety that includes a) the reason for the request and b) the proposed alternative for an individualized learning activity which meets the goals of the learning activity being exempted. The application applies to the following state assessments:

Science

ELPA Summative, Alt-ELPA and ELPA Screener

Extended Assessments in ELA, Math, and Science

Kindergarten

Please fill out the form found on this page and return it to your child's principal. The principal is asked to take a meeting with you to review the application and discuss the available accommodations for the requested content exemptions. The application is then forwarded to Rachel Aazzerah at 1204 NE 201st Avenue, Fairview, OR 97024, for final review and approval.

Davis Elementary School Dismissal Plan 2022/2023

Davis Parents,

Good afternoon! What a wonderful first week of school here at Davis Elementary School. I have seen happy faces, and students really excited about being back at school. As we start a new year, I wanted to point out a few changes with our Afternoon dismissal procedure. There has been a bit of confusion and I will try to clarify.

Student Walkers: Students who are walkers walk independently without anyone from their family walking with them to and from school. If you have a Kindergarten – 2nd grade student and they are a walker, then they must be accompanied by an older sibling to walk home. Students will be paired with their siblings and then they will be able to walk home. A form will be going home next week to confirm that your family is a walking family. Please fill out form and return to your child’s teacher.

Parent Pick Up: Parents or family members who are picking up their students at Davis. If you drive to pick up your student. Please stay in your car and a staff member will approach you and then call for your student. If you walk and you are picking up your child, then you will need to wait in the parent pick up line at the front of the school. Please do not stand by the cafeteria doors. Students will then be called out of their rooms when parents have checked in with front door staff. Students will then walk out the front door and be released to their family.

Bus Riders: Students who are riding the bus will stay in the classroom until the bus arrives at Davis. Once the bus has arrived students will line up in their hall and be escorted by staff to their bus. Like in years past transportation is having some difficulty hiring enough drivers to cover routes. So, some days routes may be delayed which will get student home a bit later than normal. Please be at stops ready to pick up your students daily.

¡Buenas tardes! Qué maravillosa primera semana de escuela aquí en la Escuela Primaria de Davis. He visto caras felices y estudiantes realmente emocionados por volver a la escuela. Al comenzar un nuevoaño, quería señalar algunos cambios con nuestro procedimiento de salida por la tarde. Ha habido un

Caminantes estudiantiles: Los estudiantes que son caminantes caminan de forma independiente sin que

nadie de su familia camine con ellos hacia y desde la escuela. Si tiene un estudiante de Kindergarten –

Recogida de padres: Padres o miembros de la familia que están recogiendo a sus estudiantes en Davis.

Si conduce para recoger a su estudiante. Por favor, quédese en su automóvil y un miembro del personal

se acercará a usted y luego llamará a su estudiante. Si camina y está recogiendo a su hijo, deberá

esperar en la fila de espera de los padres en la parte delantera de la escuela. Por favor, no se pare junto

As we are getting closer to the end of the school year, I wanted to inform you about my departure from Davis Elementary School next year. Last week, I announced to the Davis Staff that I will not be returning to Davis next school year and that I accepted a job as Principal in the Hillsboro School District.

I have been so honored to serve as your Assistant Principal and Interim Principal for the past 3 years. During this time, I was able to build strong relationships with students, staff, parents and community partners, which made it a very difficult choice to leave. The Davis students, staff, and community will forever hold a special place in my heart.

As I reflect on my past three years at Davis, I am in awe of the amazing things we were able to accomplish. Together we were able to navigate through unprecedented times. As a community we were able to make it through the COVID 19 shutdown, Comprehensive Distance Learning, Hybrid Learning, and return back to in-person learning. Although this was no easy feat, the only way we were able to do this was by sticking together.

I want to thank the Davis students for their resiliency and hard work. I have learned more from them than they will ever know, and I am forever grateful for their trust, love, and knowledge. Davis will continue to ensure they are prepared for middle school and beyond. Davis students have a bright future and I wish them the very best.

Moving forward, Mrs. Davis will be returning as your principal and she will be working alongside the Reynolds School District central office to fill the vacant Assistant Principal position. If you have questions regarding this process, please reach out to the front office.

Me he sentido muy honrado de servir como su Subdirector y Director Interino durante los últimos 3 años. Happy May! I hope you are all enjoying this wacky spring weather we have been having- sun, snow, and rain. Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Dragons have begun OSAS State Testing. I’m excited to share that at the end of April we welcomed our baby boy Theo into the world. I have started by maternity leave and will be returning in August 2022 to get ready for the 2022-2023 school year. I can’t wait to see you all again soon!

I am so proud of all the learning our Dragons have done this school year and know that our Dragons will continue to show respect, build relationships, and practice rigor for the rest of the 2022-2023 school year. While I am gone, Mykle Rojas (mrojas@rsd7.net) will serve as our interim principal and Katie Gunderson (kgunderson@rsd7.net) will serve as our interim vice principal. If you need anything at all, don’t hesitate to reach out to them.

May 2nd-May 6th is Teacher Appreciation Week. At Davis we are so grateful for the amazing teachers and support staff! I encourage you and your child to celebrate a Davis staff member this week. Here are some ideas:

Write a thank you note
Draw a picture
Send a Remind message or email sharing with them why you appreciate having them as your child’s teacher
Bring them a flower, special treat or plant
Write a poem about why you appreciate your teacher
Tell them thank you

Feliz Mayo! Espero que esten disfrutando de este loco clima que estamos teniendo en esta primavera-sol,nieve y lluvia. Estoy emocionada de compartir que a finales de Abril le dimos la bienvenida a nuestro bebé Theo al mundo. He comenzado con la ausencia de maternidad y regresaré en Agosto de 2022 para prepararme para el año escolar 2022-2023. ¡Espero con ansias en volver a verlos a todos muy pronto!

Estoy muy orgullosa de todo el aprendizaje que nuestros Dragones han hecho este año escolar y sé que nuestros Dragones continuarán mostrando respeto, construyendo relaciones y practicando el rigor durante el resto del año escolar 2022-2023.

It was exciting to connect with you for parent/teacher conferences and celebrate the learning our Dragons have done this year! If you were unable to meet with your child’s teacher, I encourage you to reach out via Remind, email, or by calling the school ((503)665-9193) to set up a time to check-in about your child’s progress.

This spring our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will be participating in OSAS State Testing. Our Dragons are ready to rock the test!

Please encourage your child to do their best by:

taking time on their test,
eating a healthy breakfast, and
getting a good night’s sleep.

Your child’s teacher will let you know when your child will be testing. If you have any questions about testing, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

I am excited to share that in March 2022, I completed my Doctorate in Education at Portland State University. The research for my dissertation was about being a principal during the Covid-19 pandemic. While completing my research I was extremely proud of everything our community did together to support our Dragons and each other during the school closures and reopening.

I am truly proud to call myself a Davis Dragon every day!

Estoy emocionada de compartir que en Marzo de 2022, completé mi Doctorado en Educación en la Universidad Estatal de Portland. La investigación para mi disertación fue sobre ser directora durante la pandemia de Covid-19. Mientras completaba mi investigación, estaba extremadamente orgullosa de todo lo que nuestra comunidad hizo juntos para apoyar a nuestros Dragones y a los demás durante el cierre y la reapertura de las escuelas.

Dear Davis Dragons,

Happy New Year!

I can’t believe it’s 2022. We are so excited to have our Dragons back at school following break; Showing Respect, Building Relationships, and Practicing Rigor. I hope you had a relaxing and restful winter break. It was fun to see so many of our students and families at our Zoom Winter Family Night last week, we are planning another one for later in the year.

We appreciate your support in implementing our COVID-19 safety policies at Davis. If your child is feeling sick, please call the Davis office. Our awesome Davis office team and school nurse can support you with guidance around when your child can return to school, the need to for a COVID-19 test, or general questions about whether you should send your student to school with symptoms, etc.

With Valentine’s day approaching next month I wanted to take a moment and remind you that we have a No Candy policy at Davis. Check in with your classroom teacher about what their plans are for friendship celebrations. There are many ways that we can celebrate one another without sweets.

Here are just a few examples:

An act of kindness- like helping someone accomplish a task
Smiling all day long
Telling someone how much you care for them
Giving someone a thumbs-up or kind word
Drawing someone a picture
Writing a note to tell someone that they are awesome!

Feliz Año Nuevo!

No puedo creer que ya estamos en el 2022! Estamos muy emocionados de tener a nuestros Dragones de regreso después de estas vacaciones. Mostrando Respeto, Construyendo Relaciones y Practicando Rigor. Espero que tuvieron un descanso de relajamiento durante estas vacaciones de invierno.
