The Role of the School Counselor

School counselors are professionally trained specialists with strong backgrounds in behavioral science and human relations. Counselor's work with the school team to identify school and personal problems, support students' academic needs, help students deal with social and emotional issues, and facilitate the planning of current and future education.

With Whom Does the School Counselor Consult?

The counselors meet regularly with teachers and other support personnel. They also work with administrators, outside counselors, and the school psychologist in order to support the academic, career, and social/personal goals of students.

What Does the School Counselor Do?

  • Meets with students individually and in groups.
  • Orients and schedules new students.
  • Maintains student records.
  • Assists in identifying students with special needs and facilitates the psycho-educational evaluations.
  • Coordinates team meetings with teachers and parents.
  • Assists parents in accessing community resources and makes referrals for services when necessary.
