CTE at RLA: Computer Science Program

CTE Month is a public awareness campaign that takes place each February to celebrate the value and achievements of Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs across the country. Learn more about RLA's Computer Science program from teacher Kendra DeWater:

The computer science program has five different classes: Exploring Computer Science, Web Page Design, Python Programming, Interactive Media, and 3-D Modeling and Printing. The classes are created using both the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards that the district technology committee is adopting, as well as input and suggestions from industry professionals in computer science professions and programs.

This year, the Interactive Media students each made a podcast from brainstorming to publishing. They wrote, recorded, and edited podcasts that were full of diversity, color, and life. The Exploring Computer Science students have had a taste of coding, data analysis, and different programs they might use. Next term they will be starting on robotics. The Web Page Design students are working on a website with multiple pages, images, and links about their media recommendations and how they feel represented by media. The Python Programming students have created small games that can keep score and interact with the user. The 3-D printing class will start in the Spring and will be full of opportunities to work on real-world projects with engineering and 3-D printing. Students are already eyeing the technology and asking questions about the class.

We have partnered with Exploring Computer Science, an organization that focuses on getting students engaged in CS programs who are usually underrepresented in the field (this includes female/non-binary students, students of color, and students with disabilities). They work on designing a curriculum that is engaging and student choice-centered while still being rigorous and industry based. We have also partnered with Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) to bring leadership opportunities to the students and the ability to connect with more industry partners.

It has been exciting to see students feeling successful and confident with something they were just recently introduced to, and for them to see the direct results of their learning by coding, writing, and creating. I am excited to see where this program goes!
