It is important to consider several factors as you decide when to take the
driver education class including. These include: Age (a student must be at
least 15 years of age); maturity; responsibility; attitude; class load;
extra-curricular activities; finances; health; commitment to completion; and
transportation to & from driver education classes. With about 200 students
successfully completing our classes each year we know from experience that
special attention should be given to the above items. Be aware that this class
will require some extra time in an already busy teen schedule. Time needs to be
set aside for attending a weekly class, completing outside reading and
homework, attending six 2-hour behind-the-wheel sessions, and for practice
driving with parent(s) or guardian(s). A minimum of 30 classroom hours, 12
behind-the-wheel hours, and 5 hours of home practice must be completed to pass
the course.
Additional Information
Our 33-hour program has received state and national recognition. You will
find that we promote communication between instructors, students, and parents.
We look forward to working with you and your teen to provide a strong driver
and traffic safety education foundation for years of successful, crash-free
driving. Please feel free to call Jon Congdon
at 503-667-3186 (x1018) to discuss any concerns you may have… including
comparisons between our program and commercial driving schools.
- Fee
- $225, which must be paid when the application is turned in. Mr.
Congdon will personally contact each enrollee prior to the parent/teen
class to verify class choice and answer questions.
- Fee Refund
- Students may receive a complete refund of the course fee if they
withdraw before attending the first class following the parent/teen
class. The fee is not refundable after that time but the student may
choose to take the next session instead. In case of course failure or
expulsion from the class due to severe attitude or behavior problems, a
student must re-sign up and pay the fee again in order to take the DE
class a 2nd time.
- Textbooks
- Textbooks are provided and must be returned. Severely damaged or
lost texts must be paid for prior to receiving the completion
certificate at the end of the course.
- Class Size
- Each class is limited to 30 students meeting the program Requirements
- Parent Meeting
- Parent(s)/Guardian(s) and students are required to attend the
parent/teen class which is considered the first class meeting.
Attendance will be taken and text materials given out. Information
concerning the classroom, behind-the-wheel phase, and parent mentoring
will be provided. Scheduling of the BTW drive sessions will also be
accomplished. Students are encouraged to identify potential scheduling
problems prior to this class so that the best days of the week for
scheduling the in-car sessions will be known.
- In-Car Lessons
- Students will receive at least 12 hours of guided driving
instruction; six (6) hours behind-the-wheel and six (6) hours of active
observation. In-car lessons are scheduled Monday — Friday after
school and on the weekends at mutually agreed upon times. It is
required that students also receive five (5) hours of guided driving
practice with parent(s) in order to complete the course.
- Occasionally we have students who have difficulty remembering to
come to a scheduled behind-the-wheel session or come without a permit.
Since our teachers are paid to arrive ready to teach, if the drive must
be cancelled and adequate notice has not been given so the drive could
not be rescheduled then a penalty of 35 dollars will be assessed. It is
our desire to never need to assess this penalty.
